community. <br />

<br />
We are so excited to be moving forward with work on the Chestnut Lot. To date, over 70 different folks have come out over the last 6 months to help in one way or another on the lot. It is so encouraging to have such a supportive community here in Long Beach interested in what we are doing. We have also been expanding our compost and food pick-up program recently. More updates on that to come soon.<br />
<br />
<b>We will</b> <b>not be at the Chestnut Lot this Sunday, 31 March. </b> But will resume work the following Thursday to prepare our large annual planting area! We will need plenty of help building out the area, so all willing hands are welcome!<br />

<strong>6 Week Hands-On Workshop at the Chestnut Lot!</strong><br />
After much deliberation, planning, and waiting, we are moving back onto
the lot at Chestnut. It is a 200' x 50' in downtown Long Beach with a
diverse selection of fruit trees on site that we have work planned out
for developing the site over the next year. We will be doing it in 6
week workshop courses.<br /><br /> This Fall, we have a comprehensive
outline of projects and goals that include weekly lessons and hands-on
projects. We are trading education for labor! Please RSVP so that if
there are too many people, we can see about alternative projects. We
hope to have at least around 15 people signed up to commit to the 6 week
course. Free of charge (though donations are welcome, recommended $5 /
workshop). No one will be turned away if they can only come certain
days. <a data-cke-saved-href="http://foodscapelb.blogspot.com/2012/10/729-chestnut-fall-schedule.html" href="http://foodscapelb.blogspot.com/2012/10/729-chestnut-fall-schedule.html" target="_blank">Click here to see the outline</a>. planning has been happening over the last month, and we are planning to
open our new site around October. The Urban Oasis is officially going to
be part of a new educational center in Long Beach called The Catalyst
Center for Urban Sustainability. Its intention is to inform people in
the city about how to live more sustainably in an urban context. The
center will also include The HUB (a not-for-profit bike shop that has
been opperating at that site for two years now), the Long Beach Free
Store, solar and recycling education, and other facilities still in
planning.<br /><br />For those not aware yet, the Urban Oasis is going to be
a plant installation composed of edible, medicinal and native plants
inside of containers built from repurposed materials. They will be
rollable, movable sturctures that folks can configure into customizable
spaces for different uses. We would like to have volunteers help develop
the site with us. For the next 4 weeks, we will have the site open
twice a week on Wednesday and Sunday mornings for those interested to
come help us develop our ambitious project. Many materials have already
been gathered for the Oasis, and now we are building and planting. Here
are the dates and times we plan to be there.<br /><br />Address: 1730 Long Beach Blvd., Long Beach CA 90813<br />

*As always, please come prepared with a hat, sunscreen, water and snacks. Eventually we will just be snacking on the job. ;)<br /><br />I
will send emails out ahead of time if scheduling changes. I look
forward to meeting and getting to know some new folks, sharing passions
and information, and discussing future endeavors.<br /><br /><br />Ryan - Foodscape Long BeachUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5809772194205673674.post-5849053900170786452012-06-15T11:42:00.001-07:002012-06-15T11:42:44.707-07:00Updates! Work at Josue's this weekend // Green LB // Urban Oasis<span style="font-size: 14px;">Hello all,<br />
<br />
Thank you everyone who passed through at the Green Festival last
Saturday. It was great to meet a lot of new people and see a lot of
familiar faces. Green Long Beach did a great job organizing the event
this year and everyone seemed to be having a good time. I look forward
to seeing some of those new folks playing in the soil with us very soon.
Updates on projects below.<br />
<br />
<br />
<strong>Josue Posada's House</strong><br />
<br />
We are going to be back in the garden this weekend at Josue's House. <strong>Sunday, June 17 from 10 - 3ish we will be there</strong>.
Activities will including building mounded planter beds, running some
micro-irrigation lines, planting another tree and planting other
vegetables. We will be gathering more soil ahead of time. </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: 14px;"><strong>Urban Oasis</strong><br />
<br />
There is now funding for the previously mentioned Urban Oasis project at <a href="http://foodscapelb.us5.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=f9ea30724ca0da0847281c870&id=f4aa4159b1&e=ed791d37ce" style="color: #336699; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline;">The HUB</a>.
We will be arranging a series of workshops oriented around constructing
the project soon. Very exciting news so if you are interested in this
project, keep an eye out for what is coming up. Here are some quick
details on the project:</span><br />
<ul>
<li>
<span style="font-size: 11px;">We are creating a stimulating,
inspiring and educational space for people to see working examples of
how to live more sustainably in the city. The Urban Oasis will
essentially be composed of creative planter boxes, edible and native
plants, and composting and water harvesting features. We are looking to
gather materials that can be used as large containers that we can put on
wheels. The short list of things we are interested in:</span></li>
<li>
<span style="font-size: 11px;">Truck beds</span></li>
<li>
<span style="font-size: 11px;">5 gallon / large buckets (check with
local restaurants and grocery delis about their food grade plastic
buckets. also, property management companies tend to have a lot of
plastic buckets from paint / spackle.)</span></li>
<li>
<span style="font-size: 11px;">Bath tubs, sinks, or other large porcelain things! (we really want tubs)</span></li>
<li>
<span style="font-size: 11px;">Scrap wood / old pallets are useful for lots of things.</span></li>
<li>
<span style="font-size: 11px;">Contact us via email to come pick up
things if you have difficulty with transporting them. We would
preferably like to collect them at The Hub if you have the means. Let us
know what you'd like to bring. </span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<span style="font-size: 14px;">Thank you all for your interest. It looks like we will be getting to share a lot of knowledge and good work this summer.<br />

More details for farther down in the email. <br /><br />
<ul>
<li>Thought
For Food will be a free discussion on food security as part of Food
Revolution Day. I will be one of the panelists discussing the topic. It
takes place this Saturday <span>from 1-2pm at Center Space located
at Admiral Kidd Park (On Santa Fe Ave in Long Beach just north of PCH).</span> Facebook event: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/375619409140254/" target="_blank">click here</a>. More details below. </li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Pride
Parade is Sunday, May 20th from 10:30 - 12:30 along Ocean Blvd. We are
postponing work at Josue Posada's house that day so that we may partake
in observing / participating in this important event. If you would like
to walk with Foodscape Long Beach in the parade (with our cute little
banner), come join us! We will <strong>meet on the Bluff area at Ocean Blvd and Coronado Avenue at 9:00AM. </strong>More details below.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Josue Posada's Yard turnover will resume at 2:00pm
until about 6:30 on Sunday. We need volunteers! The afternoon will be a
hands-on workshop on sheet mulching, tree / veggie planting, seed
starting and soil amending. Time dollars for time bank members :-). The
more folks we have the more work we can do! Details below.<br />
</li>
</ul>
<br />Looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend!
Please, if you can, just respond to rsvp to any of these events, just so
I have a rough idea of who to expect. <br /><br /><br /><br /><u>Thought For Food:</u><br />
<br />As we all know, we are amidst an epidemic - obesity and diet related
diseases are defining the health of the next generation. We want food
education back in schools, universities, homes, communities and business<span>es. <br /> <br />
This month, we join 450+ cities around the world in Jamie Oliver's Food
Revolution Day network and 50+ cities in the Evolver network in
discussing global and local food issues, asking people to consider their
food choices and provide a platform for those with the skills and
knowledge about food to pass that along!<br /> <br /> Ryan Serrano, founder
of FoodScape and Food Not Bombs member and Melina Paris, local
journalist and Label GMO's activist, will speak on the food revolution
that is happening in Long Beach and beyond. Jorge Rivera, founder of The
Greener Good Farmer's Market will also speak and give a tour of Long
Beach's newest market.<br /> <br /> Together, we hope to give you plenty of food for thought, and thought for food!<br /> <br />
This free discussion will take place from 1-2pm at Center Space located
at Admiral Kidd Park (On Santa Fe Ave in Long Beach just north of PCH).<br /> <br /> <a href="http://www.foodrevolutionday.org/" rel="nofollow nofollow" target="_blank">www.foodrevolutionday.org</a></span><br /><br /><u>Pride Parade:</u><br />
<br />Join us as we walk in this year's Long Beach Pride Parade! It will be this <strong>Sunday, May 20th</strong>. We will <strong>meet on the Bluff area at Ocean Blvd and Coronado Avenue at 9:00AM</strong>. All of our participants must sign a city waiver. We'll hang out together until the parade starts (about 10:30AM).
We'll probably get to the end of the parade route by about noon or
12:30pm.<br />
<br />
Feel free to bring signs or banners to promote your group

volunteers who showed up today! We are postponing tomorrow's work day
until Sunday the 20th based on turnout today, and mother's day. Sunday
volunteers partake in hands on experience with soil remediation and
fertilizing, cardboard sheet mulching, efficient garden infrastructure
installation and if all that goes well . . . planting! We may need some
folks earlier in the week to help pick up loads of much in preparation,
more on that soon. <br />

<br />
- <b>May 12 + 13 we will convert Josue Posada's front and backyard into edible landscape! </b>We
need as many folks as are available between 9:30 am and 4 pm to help

<br />
We have lots coming together in the wings right now. Here is a quick news update. <br />
<br />
-
The Chestnut Ave lot we were working on over late summer (near 7th St
on Chestnut Ave) was thought to be getting sold. However, recent the
proprietors have recently recanted and asked Foodscape to come back and
help them with the lot. This time, we have submitted a long term
proposal / agreement, and look to be doing a slightly larger scale
remediation of that space. I know some of you were upset that we were
not able to continue with that space, but, this new situation looks
promising and more productive. We will be working more closely with the
property owners and mangers to run some higher quality programming
there.<br />
<br />
- We have been donated some very nice ready to plant Valencia Orange
trees! They will be going into the next yards we are planting.
Organizing has been stepped up a bit to try and get these trees in the
ground. Thank you very much to Jeff Rowe and The Great Park in Irvine
for those.<br />
<br />
- We are still needing materials for the The Urban Oasis Project at The Hub (<a href="http://hublb.com/" target="_blank">http://hublb.com/</a>). The list of things we are looking for again are:<br />
<ul>
<li>Truck beds</li>

- <b>May 12 + 13 we will convert Josue Posada's front and backyard into edible landscape! </b>We
need as many folks as are available between 9:30 am and 4 pm to help
with the work on these days. The second day of work is contingent upon
whether or not we can finish on the 12th. Volunteers will get some
hands-on experience installing an edible landscape using permaculture
principles. He lives near the intersection of Atlantic Ave and 14th St
on the Westside of Long Beach. Please RVSP by responding. I will send
address details, work waiver form, and other info. <br />
* * * If you would like to help fiscally support this project (which we
very much need that help), you can donate to our general fund <a href="https://www.wepay.com/donations/foodscapelb_funds" target="_blank">here (https://www.wepay.com/<wbr></wbr>donations/foodscapelb_funds)</a>.<br />

Many of you have been very supportive of what we are trying to
do in Long Beach. The positive feedback has been extremely affirming and
helpful. What a lovely community we share. More to come soon!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5809772194205673674.post-39122696881545399912012-03-28T13:13:00.002-07:002012-03-28T13:13:57.198-07:00Urban Oasis @ The Hub / / Nursery NetworkHello all,<br />
<br />
We have been in the process of planning out some projects that are about to really take shape. We are inhibited, however, by a lack of materials/funding at our disposal. We are looking for some specific things for our projects. Here are some things we need, if you could please help by saving them if you come across them. Here are the project descriptions and things we need.<br />
<br />
The Urban Oasis Project @ <a href="http://hublb.com/" target="_blank">The Hub</a> (fellow Catalyst collaborative partner)<br />
<br />
We are creating a stimulating, inspiring and educational space for people to see working examples of how to live more sustainably in the city. The Urban Oasis will essentially be composed of creative planter boxes, edible and native plants, and composting and water harvesting features. We are looking to gather materials that can be used as large containers that we can put on wheels. The short list of things we are interested in:<br />
<br />
<ul><li>Truck beds</li>
<li>5 gallon / large buckets (check with local restaurants and grocery delis about their food grade plastic buckets. also, property management companies tend to have a lot of plastic buckets from paint / spackle.)</li>
<li>Bath tubs, sinks, or other large porcelain things! (we really want tubs)</li>
<li>Scrap wood / old pallets are useful for lots of things.</li>
</ul>Contact us via email to come pick up things if you have difficulty with transporting them. We would preferably like to collect them at The Hub if you have the means. Let us know what you'd like to bring. Collection times to be posted soon. <br />
<br />
<br />
Nursery Network Project<br />
We are looking to create a farther reaching network in Long Beach that enables folks who do not have access to land the ability to participate in and contribute urban agriculture projects. The Nursery Network Project will make seed starting materials available to the volunteer public, they will get free workshops about seed starting, start seeds and home and then (hopefully) be the ones to put those plants in the ground somewhere in the Farm Network. Plants are quite expensive and to spread out the cost of starting so many plants will subsidize costs to the organization as well as enable more people to contribute in some way. If you have nursery trays / containers we can certainly use them. If you would like to participate on a larger scale (starting more plants for us) that is also very helpful. More project details to follow. <br />
<br />
<br />
Please forward the information on to your friends and neighbors and schools. We are very excited to move forward on these projects!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5809772194205673674.post-29933934716991430742012-02-29T15:37:00.000-08:002012-02-29T15:37:56.477-08:00People's State of the CityFoodscape will be tabling at this event, which is discussion a range of social, political and economic issues in Long Beach. <br />
Sorry things have been slow on my end. Lots of necessary reorganization has been happening. I am looking for administrative help from anyone willing to volunteer. I particularly need creative & ambitious folks who would be interested in: grant writing, outreach, fundraising, and managing small scale projects (say, a backyard). Please pass the word along if you know interested others. Foodscape is needing to mature! We have properties waiting to be developed, but it just cannot happen without time, money and participation. Is that too obvious?<br />
<br />
SEED STARTING PARTY TOMORROW, Sunday 28 January @ 11am - 740 Roswell Ave (sorry, I know it is last minute) <br />
<ul><li>This is the start of what I would like to have become the (hopefully ongoing) People's Nursery project. Growing/accessing real food is a right in my view, and I want these plants to be more available to people. These plants will go to Foodscape farms and neighbors who like to share. I would like to invite you folks to my house to plant some seeds, clean some space, drink tea, and maybe snack on plants. I will have plenty of materials here (I think), but bring what you can if you happen to have it (seeds, containers, soil). I will demonstrate and discuss how to prepare a proper seed starting mix. We might do some other yard work if we want to get crazy! Want to take some of your favorite planted veggies home? Okay! I have a no-chase policy. We'll talk about that tomorrow. Bring snacks to share if you'd like (meat free, preferably vegan). <br />
</li>
</ul>URBAN OASIS at THE HUB<br />
<ul><li>A new project at The HUB. For those who don't know, The Hub is a not for profit organization, also part of the Catalyst Network of Communities, bicycle shop for people to learn about how to fix their bike (for $5/hr!), work toward earning a bike, purchasing cheap parts, etc. It's a great spot. They have a large parking lot area that is going to become an "Urban Oasis," a learning/demonstrating space for folks in the city to come and learn about how to live more sustainably in the city. This project will entail a lot of work, planning, and resource hunting. Anyone interested in helping plan/develop, email me with questions. Next meeting is next Sunday (5 February) @ the Hub. I'll send another reminder out this week. <br />
</li>
</ul><br />
Keep up the good fight folks. <br />

These will be projects that <i>anyone </i>can facilitate<i>.</i> We need your help and participation building these projects. Whatever resources you have at your disposal, whatever space/time/skills, whatever burgeoning interest, we want you to become enfranchised. In a world where it is unfortunately so rare to feel a sense of efficacy in anything we do, in anywhere we live, we see this as an opportunity to remedy that symptom.<br />
<br />
Please do not hesitate to get involved, whatever your experience. Please take a look at the <a href="http://foodscapelb.blogspot.com/p/peoples-projects.html">Peoples' Projects</a>, and email <a href="mailto:FoodscapeLB@gmail.com">FoodscapeLB@gmail.com</a> with your interests.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5809772194205673674.post-83308487256329657142011-11-17T16:29:00.001-08:002011-11-17T16:29:42.850-08:00Hey Everyone,<br />
<br />
I hope all has been going well. Some things have been developing on the Foodscape front. Things have been getting organized and there are some good projects in the wings for the winter in preparation for spring. New resources have been popping up for us to use, seeds are being planted, and workshops are being planned. We have some properties that have been on hold waiting to be developed, and your help will be absolutely valuable in that process. <br />
<br />
Upcoming workshops will include:<br />
<ul><li>site analysis and permaculture design (how can we make the most of different home environments. you don't even have to use a shovel! i can wear sandals! in winter!)</li>
<li>vermiculture and bin building (why and how to do it)</li>
<li>seed starting and plant maintenance</li>
<li>other creative things (water conservation? irrigation? who knows?!)</li>

Foodscape has been busy acquiring new places to grow food on. In the last month we have managed to gather 4 good sized properties that will become part of the Farm Network. We are starting to cleanup these areas and will be needing volunteers to help with some of the cleanup work. If you are interested in helping out, please go ahead and email <a href="mailto:foodscapelb@gmail.com%20">foodscapelb@gmail.com </a>to let us know. Put volunteer in the subject and tell us your name and when you are most available. We will send emails out when we schedule cleanup and planting days, and you can come if you can.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
